The Societal Impact of Moving Away From God

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” proverbs 16:25

Most of the people that I talk to feel like our society is heading in a wrong direction. We constantly hear about mass shootings, civil unrest, and hosts of other societal ailments. Courtesy and good manners are a thing of the past. We have been taught that there are no absolutes. Morals and values are relative, we determine what is right or wrong based on our own standards and preferences. It seems like our society is on a downward spiral, with no real solutions in sight. The majority of the people don’t have much faith in our politician’s ability to meet our social challenges. But how did we end up here? Where did we go wrong?

There could be many reasons given as to how we ended up here? But In my judgment, one the main reasons for our current predicament is the departure from God. Consider a description that apostle Paul gives of societies that knew God and departed from him.

ROMANS 1:29 “they were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, v.30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Do these verses describe our society today? Are we on our way to becoming like this? I leave the judgement to you, but how do societies that know God end up here? In Romans chapter 1 apostle Paul gives us the sequence of events that causes a society to move away from God.

ROMANS 1:21 “for although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him”. It begins with the attitude of our hearts toward God. We do not esteem God or be grateful to him.

“…but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened”.

v.22 “claiming to be wise, they became fools, v.23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles”. What happens next is that we exchanged the honor that belongs to God with a substitute. In the past they worshiped idols, today we give honor to other form of philosophical point of views like secularism, humanism…etc.

v.25 “they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and serve the creature rather than the creator…” Man always worships something. If he is not worshiping the real God, he will worship and serve something in its place.

After a while we no longer see a reason to acknowledge God. V.28”…they did not see fit to acknowledge God,…” over time we  begin to exhibit the character qualities of verse 29,30,31.

In here we see the sequence of events that moves a society from knowing God to a place where we replace him with substitutes. In the course of time we lose our sense of right and wrong and self-interest becomes the deciding factor in our decision making process. As a result, our society will begin to degenerate from within. In my estimation, this is the root cause of our societal problems. The way out of it is by recognizing where we went wrong and by going back to God.
